The Central European Initiative (CEI) is composed of 17 Member States: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. They embrace a territory of 2.4 million square kilometres and a population of nearly 260 million. As of 1st May 2004, the CEI has 7 EU and 10 non-EU Member Countries (the newly enlarged EU region is marked in yellow).
The CEI – the biggest and the oldest regional grouping is considered to be an appropriate platform for exchange of views on current situation in the CEI region. EU enlargement in May this year created an environment conducive to the reinforcement of mutual co-operation within the CEI. A priority for our activities is to provide assistance to the less developed CEI members to facilitate their adaptation to the new geopolitical situation as well as support for the transfer of experience from new European Union member states.
